Description: A Colombian-rooted cafe on Central Avenue in East Charlotte, operating as a direct extension of the neighboring Manolo's Bakery. The menu features espresso and coffee drinks made with Colombian Arabica beans, a house-made gelato line, and a pastry case focused on high-end pastries and croissants rather than grab-and-go baked goods.
Housed in a converted hair salon suite, the space has a more intentional sit-and-stay feel than the original bakery next door. Named after an award-winning documentary about the bakery's founder, Manuel "Manolo" Betancur, a Colombian immigrant, social activist, and 2021 World Bread Hero.
Comments: This is one of those places where when people say, "Charlotte has no culture," I want to say, sit down with Manolo and the rest of the businesses in this corridor of Central Avenue. Immigrants, people who've been in Charlotte since the '80s and '90s, who've built their lives here. You tell them this city has no culture because you moved to South End and only go to restaurants and coffee shops that influencers peddle to you on IG and TikTok and think that's all the city has to offer.
Manolo Betancur is legitimately one of Charlotte's most beloved food figures. His bakery (Manolo's) is consistently mentioned around town, particularly when it comes to best Latin pastries in Charlotte. The Changebaker Place is right next door to the original bakery, which used to be a hair salon. Lady Betancur (Manolo's wife) designed the space and runs it. The whole idea is that it's the elevated cafe experience complementing the bakery, with proper espresso drinks, gelato, cinnamon rolls 🙌🏾, various other pastries, and loose-leaf teas. So, you got cozy seating, laptop-friendly tables, fast Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, and top tier vibes.
The documentary connection is cool. "The Change Baker" premiered at Mountainfilm in Telluride and won an award before getting its Charlotte premiere at the Carolina Theatre, on the same day the cafe opened (January 17, 2026). The film follows Manolo's journey from Colombian Army captain fleeing war to Charlotte baker to activist. The Carolina Theatre listing describes the bakery as "a hub for activism, compassion and opportunity" with the motto "Made in America by the Hands of Immigrants."
I can confirm that's all true. I saw the film at The Changebaker Place as part of my participation in the 2025-2026 cohort of the 412 Fellowship (awesome organization and program, if you're a Christian in Charlotte looking to grow deeper in your faith and how it connects to your work, I highly recommend it!). I got to hang out with Manolo and learn more about him, the film, the parts they left out, the history of Charlotte, and his growing role as an activist. As a transplant, I can tell you that speaking with him was enough to make me never again say "Charlotte has no culture". It's simply not true!
Also, the gelato here has its own Instagram at @artisengelato, and Manolo runs a nonprofit called By Immigrant Hands out of the same address. The nonprofit coffee they sell supports bakers in Ukraine, which Manolo has visited three times to deliver aid. The depth of mission behind this place is rare!
Last note if you read this far. Check out Higher Grounds, a coffee shop by the same guy in Myers Park United Methodist Church. Top tier spot to hang out and get some work done.
